Personal and Social Education (PSE)

Abusive Behaviours - DRUGS

When God created our physical bodies, he intended for us to treat them with respect and reverence. Jesus encapsulated this intention in His gospel when he referred to our physical bodies as being “temple(s) of the Holy Spirit.”
Despite God’s intention, many youths participate in abuse behaviours such as illicit drug taking, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Modern popular culture continually glorifies abusive behaviours in such mediums as contemporary music, films, magazines and television. Youth are frequently exposed to messages that support the usage of substances that have an adverse affect on their mental and physical state. Generally, such messages do not paint an accurate picture of reality.
In this unit, students are informed about the realities of excessive alcohol consumption, drug usage smoking and substance abuse. Through discussion, debate, exposition, research and factual analysis students will gain a more informed perspective of these issues and arrive at a greater understanding of why our bodies truly are “temple(s) of the Holy Spirit.”

UNIT OBJECTIVES

During the course of this unit, students will be given the opportunity to:
• Know the major illicit and legalized drugs that form the basis of drug misuse and addiction.
• Categorise drugs according to chemical composition and their effects on the human body.
• Research a major illness directly caused by smoking.
